A series of strong earthquakes hit Italy, destroying people’s homes and cutting whole communities off. The Order of Malta’s Italian Relief Corps immediately sent teams of volunteers to rescue and evacuate victims. Focusing on those who were elderly, disabled and vulnerable, the volunteers rescued those who were trapped in their homes and accompanied them to shelters.
Over 700 volunteers of the Order of Malta’s Italian Relief Corps have been assisting the victims of the earthquakes in central Italy last August, supporting the 2,000 people housed in the reception centres and providing 600 meals a day.
