Ukrainian Relief Service: Maria’s Story

Living in tiny huts with as many as 14 other family members, children in the Roma camp at Beregovo in Ukraine lack food, sanitation and hope for a better future. The Ukrainian Relief Service help 40 children with regular hot meals, assistance with homework and mentorship, working to strengthen aspirations, giving them the chance of a better future. Maria is one of these children.

“My name is Maria, and I am 14 years old. I live in the camp with my mom and my brothers. It is really hard for my mom. We can eat only if she finds something in the dustbin. My mom cannot read and write. This is why she wants me to learn. When the project came to our school, my mom wanted me to join it. Now I can read, write and count, and not just in Hungarian, but in Ukrainian too. I like my teacher very much! She always takes us to places I’ve never been before, because when I went there people always yelled at me to leave. When I grow up, I want to be just like my teacher!”
