Under Cambodian law, children can stay with their mothers in prison until 3 years of age if alternative care is not available (this has recently been lowered in 2011 from 6 years of age).
However, prison budgets do not sufficiently account for the care of these young children, particularly new-born babies requiring milk and other specific food.
CIOMAL support these mothers and their children twice a month through distribution of supplementary food and hygiene materials and provision of educational opportunities to children, primarily through the day-care centre situated just outside the walls of Prey Sar/CC2 prison (the main prison in Cambodia for women and minors).
Throughout 2011, CIOMAL supported, on average, 19 mothers and their children, 9 pregnant women and 55 women with chronic medical cases.
